The granite

In previous posts we have talked about marble and some of its main characteristics, history or uses, among other topics. Hoy, instead, on our blog, We want to talk to you and give you a short description about another material that we all also know very well.: he granite. Welcome to another post from Marbres Barcelona.

We will start by telling the origin of the granite, long before it was common to see it anywhere in Barcelona. In this case, occurs when magma cools and solidifies long distances underground. This process generates a crystallized material., with the shape, texture and other characteristics that we will describe below.

He granite is composed, mainly, for three minerals (although it is also formed by many other minerals that appear in a residual form): feldspar, quartz and mica. Apart from its aesthetic qualities, appreciated in Barcelona and in the rest of the world, granite was, and it remains, a very valuable and appreciated material, above all, for construction. This is due to its technical characteristics: resistance and durability.

Regarding physical characteristics, we can assure that, For example, The apparent density is very variable depending on the type of granite. Nevertheless, in general, can be considered a very dense material (especially the typical black parts) which make it ideal for different constructions. On the other hand the granite es, in general, a fairly waterproof material. That is to say, It absorbs very little water and makes it a very interesting material., precisely, for its resistance to water and/or ice, especially in some cities that can range from Barcelona (with normal weather and temperature) hasta Helsinki (with extreme temperatures in winter).

In reference to the mechanical characteristics of the granite, It has a very high resistance to compression (even more than, For example, the concrete). Nevertheless, at the same time, It is a very flexible material, which allows different types of uses if its thickness is reduced sufficiently. Finally, It is also worth highlighting its impact resistance, which makes it widely used in areas or places (sockets, For example) in which there is a high probability of being hit.

In the case of the characteristics it has for construction, Two aspects of granite must be highlighted. On the one hand, wear resistance: quartz prevents mass from being lost due to the friction of different elements. On the other hand, It is very easy to “work”, that is to say, it is easy to manipulate, give shape, clean it, etc.

We hope you liked this post today., as we mentioned at the beginning, a little different from those published so far on marble. Nevertheless, stay tuned for new posts about granite o, if you have any questions, consult directly with Marbres Barcelona.
